Portland Maritime Museum to launch new First Nations gallery

This month, Portland Maritime Museum will launch its new Nyamat Mirring Gallery. Co-curated with Gunditj Mirring Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation, it will tell the story of Gunditjmara and First Nations connection to Sea Country and form an important entryway into the museum itself.

A Maritime Museums of Australia Project Support Scheme grant was awarded to Glenelg Shire Council in 2024 to help bring this project to life. Cultural Collections Management Coordinator Agostina Hawkins also attended a week-long museological training course at the Australian National Maritime Museum.

You can read more about this exciting project here, and learn about MMAPSS at this site.

The Maritime Museums of Australia Project Support Scheme is funded by the Australian Government through the Australian National Maritime Museum and the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications, Sport, and the Arts.
